4 Easy steps to beat self-doubt

There is this voice deep in the crevices of our minds that chips away at your aspirations, goals and dreams in life. This voice thinks it is protecting us from harm, but really it’s stopping you from taking those leaps in life towards the real you! It is hard though to distinguish between those thoughts that are actually serving you and those that are not. You may begin to question an aspect of your life, perhaps your job, your relationships or health; maybe there is a reason. Throughout my life, I consistently use these 4 steps to get rid of that self-doubt in my life that is not serving me.

1. Be 100% confident that the path you are on will serve you

Like I mentioned earlier, sometimes these thoughts that question what you are doing may actually be there to genuinely help you. But how do you know? You should start to ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does this make me happy?
  2. Do I get excited about this?
  3. Can I imagine myself doing this for a long time?
  4. Does this person add value to my life?
  5. Do these foods benefit my health?
  6. Do I need these foods to live a long and healthy life?
  7. Will this exercise help me feel good and benefit my health/ well-being?

If the answer to all these questions is YES then you can be sure to ignore those thoughts of self-doubt. However, if you have answered NO to some of them, then perhaps those thoughts are coming deep within yourself and are trying to help you change your path. Listen to your body and really consider why these questions are popping up and whether they are real or nonsense.

2. Take small steps towards your big goals

We all have big goals or dreams that we aspire to achieve. It is very rare that people make success overnight. Rarely happens. To get from A to B you need to have a plan of action. This plan of action should consist of small, achievable steps in an upwards directory. So you have this goal you would LOVE to achieve but the self-doubt kicks in. You ask yourself those questions from step one and your answer ‘no’ to them all. However, those negative thoughts aren’t going. They keep tapping at the surfaces of your skull. “This is stupid!” “Stop now, you will never be able to achieve this!” “Get real!” Eurgh, those thoughts are soul-draining and are not your friends. You know what you are doing aligns with what you want in life, but these thoughts just won’t budge!

So, it is time to convince them that you are doing the right thing. You need results. You need proof to show your self-doubt that there is no need to worry. Break down your tasks into small manageable steps. For example, you want to run a marathon but your self-doubt keeps telling you “No way!” So start off small. Run half a mile for a few days then up this to a mile, then 2.5 miles, then 3 miles and before you know it you will be running a 10K (6.4 miles). This is proof that you can make progress. The results are amazing! Tell your self-doubt to take a step back, you are in control now.

3. Surround yourself with positively

“What about money?” “Don’t you want the stability of a regular income?” “Your goals are unrealistic” “You are making a big mistake” STOP! Yup don’t listen to these thoughts and people. They are not supporting and encouraging you along your path. For you to move towards your goals, you need to ignore or get rid of the people that FUEL your self-doubt. You need less fuel. When there is less fuel, the self-doubt can’t grow. Just like a fire, take the fuel away, you have no fire.

You need to surround yourself with people who are encouraging, optimistic, positive and supportive about the journey you are taking. By having these people in your life, they will help to crush those feelings of self-doubt. We all need help in life but we just need the right sort of support. The support that will serve you.

4. Expect obstacles in your journey

The path in life is a bumpy one. There will be some dips, where it might feel as if your self-doubt has control, and there will be some highs where you absolutely crush that self-doubt. There will be some bends, potholes and dead ends. The trick is to anticipate these obstacles and tackle them as you come. The path from A to B will not be a straight forward and easy road. Know this and when you reach your first pothole and the self-doubt floods the mind, just pause and breath. Take a few breaths, remind yourself why you are on this route and how it will/ is serving you. Tell that self-doubt, “I know you are trying to protect me, but it is fine. Trust me. This is right for us. Just be patient and don’t forget why we are doing this.”

If you follow these 4 steps and implement them into your life that self-doubt can only shrink. The smaller the self-doubt, the more likely you will follow your true path and get to where you want to in life! The best of luck and remember to smile 🙂
